Patinated oak coffee table / Oak, Steel

The same chemical reaction that causes steel to rust can also be used to oxidize oak. Oak, like steel, has a high iron content, but instead of rusting it patinas to a beautiful shade of slate blue. Sapwood does not contain the same iron content that heartwood does, so it does not accept the patina as well.
